The song starts out haunting and pretty. But don't be fooled. She's got something to say, and by the time the song gets done…you will have been on a journey in your very seat.
Her sisters and her mom would tell you they could hear the piano all day everyday. In her room, whether it was the apartment in Helsinki, or one of the many in Budapest…Ruut was always working on a new tune. As soon as she figured out how to play the piano at age 7, the songs started flowing out.
Now she recalls those times as her most honest in songwriting. When you grow up, you build walls and create filters through which you always process everything through…as if to protect yourself somehow. Lately, Ruut has been focusing on returning to that honesty, singing what she really feels, what she really believes.
You will notice it immediately, when you walk into a room where Ruut is sitting at a piano. The Hotel Café in Hollywood, Genghis Cohen, The Mint, Tangiers. Since moving to Los Angeles, Ruut has made herself at home in acoustic venues all over town. She gets caught up in the moment and her soul starts pouring out. If you asked what inspires her to perform this way, she wouldn't be able to give you a one-sentence answer. Ruut has been on a journey. A journey in the shape of a circle.
Wherever she would play her songs, Ruut would seize the attention of industry people, in Nashville, in DC, and eventually LA and NY. She was different, a kind of fusion of Tori Amos, Carole King and Alicia Keys. People were always shocked when this girl from Finland would break into a riffed out chorus, displaying a huge amount of power and soul. But Ruut didn't stop there. She started trying her hands in producing and co-writing, and soon it became evident that she had a flair for pretty much all of it.
Recently, Ruut has returned to herself at the piano. It wouldn't be right to say that she's back to where she started from, rather, that she's starting a new circle. Only bigger and better this time, and with more cracks in the walls, more windows open, more honesty peeking through every corner of every song. Hearing Ruut play is like hearing someone who's here to stay.
